Special Olympics

Special Olympics has been part of Stephen's life for more than a decade.

In high school, Stephen joined a Special Olympics Unified team. We had once wondered whether we would ever be the parents sitting in the stands cheering for our child in a sport. Then we found ourselves in the bleachers watching Stephen run, hearing everyone cheer, and realizing that moment was really happening.

What began with sports grew into so much more. Stephen went on to become a two-time Special Olympics Florida State gold medal champion in golf, as well as an Athlete Leader and Global Messenger.

Through Special Olympics, Stephen has had opportunities to speak, advocate, fundraise and represent fellow athletes. One of the most meaningful came when he was invited to Washington, D.C., to represent Special Olympics and speak with senators and members of Congress about the programs and opportunities that make a difference in the lives of athletes.

Stephen has also been a top fundraiser for the Special Olympics Polar Plunge for several years and has spoken at the event to encourage others to support the athletes and programs that mean so much to him.

Most recently, in 2026, Stephen was selected for the All Access Media Team at the Special Olympics USA Games in Minnesota, where he helped cover the Games, participated in interviews, worked in media settings and shared the experience from an athlete's point of view.

Over the years, what has meant just as much as the opportunities and accomplishments are the people we have met along the way. From Special Olympics leadership and staff to the coaches, volunteers, athletes and families, the support, encouragement and genuine sense of community have been incredible. The way everyone shows up for one another is truly like no other.

For Stephen, Special Olympics comes down to three words that have become part of his message:

Friendship. Courage. Fun.
